"In this volatile time, it is vital to know that safe spaces still exist. The Jim Toy Community Center is one of them."

Kami Michels joined the Jim Toy Community Center board in 2025, inspired by the chance to “give back, get involved, and do something good.” A fierce ally and advocate, Kami’s commitment is deeply personal: as the parent of a transgender daughter, she is determined to use her voice to protect and uplift the queer community.

Kami especially values the connections she has made through the center and the opportunity to collaborate with other advocacy groups to coordinate efforts across the region. Working together, she believes, amplifies impact and ensures the community’s collective voice is heard. “Being involved has been a bright light in a very dark time,” Kami says.

With the center’s physical space now open, Kami hopes it will grow into a true hub of activity, vibrant, welcoming, and central to queer life in Washtenaw County. She envisions an expanded range of programming, encompassing support groups, educational workshops, advocacy initiatives, and social gatherings that foster meaningful connections among people of all ages and backgrounds.

Her message to the broader community is clear: “Everyone should be involved, whether by donating, joining a group, or volunteering. Every action helps ensure our continued presence.” And to LGBTQ+ individuals and allies who have not yet connected with the center, Kami offers encouragement: You don’t have to navigate this moment alone. The Jim Toy Community Center is here for you.
