Sufficient Substitute is a weekly LGBTQIA+ recovery meeting grounded in mutual aid and peer support. Founded at the original Jim Toy Community Center in 2014, the group continues a long-standing tradition of creating space for LGBTQIA+ people navigating recovery from drug or alcohol use.
Unlike professional treatment programs, mutual aid groups are peer-led and built around shared lived experience. Part
icipants support one another as equals, offering encouragement, accountability, practical tools, and understanding rooted in personal experience. The group follows the structure and principles of Alcoholics Anonymous while centering the unique experiences of LGBTQIA+ community members.
For many participants, one of the most valuable aspects of the group is fellowship. Recovery can feel isolating, and building meaningful social connections is an important part of healing and maintaining sobriety. Members often describe the group as a place where they can be honest, understood, and reminded that they are not alone.
Sufficient Substitute is a closed meeting, meaning it is reserved for people who have a desire to stop drinking or using drugs. The confidential setting allows participants to speak openly and receive support from peers who understand the challenges of addiction and recovery. The group also helps connect newcomers to additional meetings and recovery resources in the community.
Sufficient Substitute meets weekly on Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. at the Jim Toy Community Center. New participants are always welcome.
