Elizabeth Janovic has been a part of the Jim Toy Community Center since 2013, drawn in by the vision and presence of its namesake. “Jim’s passion for supporting the community was palpable and contagious,” she recalls. “Being around him made me want to be better and do more.” That drive has kept her dedicated to the center’s mission for over a decade, serving on the board since 2016.

For Elizabeth, the center is more than just an organization—it’s a lifeline. “Even when we didn’t have a physical space, the center was still there—helping people find shelter, legal assistance, and food,” she says. Now, with a dedicated space to call home, she envisions a future where it becomes a vibrant hub, full of community-driven programming. She’s especially passionate about expanding support for youth, trans individuals, and those in the LGBTQ+ community struggling with substance use disorders.

Elizabeth is also deeply aware of the challenges ahead. “LGBTQ+ rights are under siege. This is not a time for complacency,” she says. That’s why she urges people to get involved in any way they can—whether by volunteering, donating, or simply showing up. “Call your representatives. Make your voice heard. Even small actions make a difference.”

Her message to those who haven’t yet connected with the center is simple: This space is yours. “Bring your talents, your ideas, your energy. Let’s build a place where we give what we can and take what we need—together.”
