The State of Michigan has taken a historic step in honoring the legacy of LGBTQ+ leaders by installing its first official state historical marker dedicated to Jim Toy. Alongside Jim, the marker also recognizes trailblazers Kathy Kozachenko, Nancy Wechsler, and Jerry DeGrieck—individuals whose courage and leadership paved the way for generations of LGBTQ+ people and allies.
This marker provides more than just a physical sign. It serves as a place for reflection, celebration, and education. It reminds us of the values and progress our community has fought for, and the work still ahead to ensure equality and dignity for all.
On this special day, Joe Halsch, Executive Director of the Jim Toy Community Center, was joined by past board members and dear friends of Jim Toy to honor his enduring impact. Together, they celebrated not only Jim’s memory but also the broader legacy of LGBTQ+ advocacy in Ann Arbor and across Michigan.
The marker is more than a tribute—it’s a call to remember that our history is alive in the progress we continue to make. We invite everyone to visit, reflect, and celebrate the incredible leaders who helped shape a more inclusive future.
