“It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of something larger than myself that fosters inclusivity and support.”

For CJ McLaughlin, community has always been at the heart of their work. Their journey with the Jim Toy Community Center began in 2020 through local organizing efforts, but their deeper involvement came two years later, when a fellow board member encouraged them to take on a larger role. Since then, CJ has served on the board with purpose and pride, driven by a belief in the center’s power to create tangible, positive change in the lives of LGBTQ+ people across Washtenaw County.
“Knowing that I’m contributing to something that truly makes a difference has been deeply fulfilling,” CJ shares. “It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of something larger than myself that fosters inclusivity and support.” With the center’s new physical space now open in downtown Ann Arbor, CJ envisions expanded programming—support groups, life skills workshops, food prep classes, and job interview training—reaching even more people, including in Ypsilanti and the surrounding area. They see the center as a place not just for events, but for essential learning, healing, and connection.
CJ encourages others to find their own way to get involved. “Whether you’re LGBTQ+ or an ally, your support matters—volunteer, donate, attend an event, or just share one of our posts. Every action helps build a stronger, more inclusive community.”
And if you’re unsure where to begin? “Start with the annual Pride event,” says CJ, “Attending an event is a great way to meet people and find your place.”
