Statement from the Jim Toy Community Center on President Trump’s Dangerous Ban on Transgender Troops
ANN ARBOR – Jim Toy Community Center (JTCC) President, Travis Radina, issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s harmful and dangerous announcement that he will ban transgender Americans from serving in the military.
“Thousands of transgender Americans have served, and continue to serve, in the United States military with honor and distinction. A recent study found that one in five transgender Americans has served in the military -- more than double the rate of the general population*. Their service to this nation should be celebrated and revered, but instead, President Trump has chosen to endanger the lives of these brave American soldiers. This unpatriotic political decision could result in the immediate discharge of more than 15,000 active duty troops**, undermining the readiness and morale of our armed forces, and putting the security of our nation at risk. We cannot - and will not - allow the politics of prejudice and bigotry to undermine the strength and readiness of America’s armed forces. Nor will we allow President Trump - or any other short-sighted politician - to use discrimination and hatred to score cheap political points.
Today, President Trump declared war on the TBLGQ community, but he’s dramatically underestimating our strength and resolve. We will resist. We will fight back. And we will prevail.”
The Jim Toy Community Center exists to provide information, education, social events, and advocacy for and by the transgender, gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, and allied residents of Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and greater Washtenaw County. JTCC envisions an inclusive community where people of diverse sexual orientation and gender identity are visible and live together in equality, respect and happiness.
